Bred vectors and forecast errors in the NASA coupled general circulation model

چکیده
2 Abstract The breeding method has been implemented in the NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) coupled general circulation model (CGCM) in its operational configuration where ocean data assimilation is used to initialize the coupled forecasts. Bred vectors (BVs), designed to capture the dominant growing errors in the atmosphere-ocean coupled system, are applied as initial ensemble perturbations. We investigate the potential improvement for ensemble prediction by comparing BVs with the oceanic growing errors, estimated by the one-month forecast error from the non-perturbed forecast. Our results show that one-month forecast errors and BVs from the NASA CGCM share very similar features: BVs are clearly related to forecast errors in both SST and equatorial subsurface temperature, particularly when the BV growth rate is large. Both the forecast errors and the BVs in the subsurface are dominated by large-scale structures near the thermocline. Our results suggest that the forecast errors are dominated by dynamically evolving structures related to the variations of the background anomalous state, and that their shapes can be captured by BVs, especially during the strong 1997-1998 El Niño. Hindcast experiments starting from January 1997 with one pair of BVs achieve a significant improvement compared to the control (unperturbed) hindcast by capturing many important features of this event, including the westerly wind burst in early 1997.

Application of coupled bred vectors to seasonal - to - interannual forecasting and ocean data assimilation
Coupled bred vectors (BVs), generated from the NASA/GMAO coupled general circulation model, are designed to capture the uncertainties related to slowly varying coupled instabilities. Two applications of the BVs are investigated in this study. First, the coupled BVs are used as initial perturbations for ensemble forecasting purposes. Results show that the seasonal-to-interannual variability fore...

The breeding method has been implemented in the NASA Seasonal-to-Interannual Prediction Project (NSIPP) coupled general circulation model (CGCM) with the ultimate goal of improving operational seasonal to interannual climate predictions through ensemble forecasting and data assimilation. This is the first attempt to isolate the evolving ENSO instability and its corresponding global atmospheric ...

A 3D-variational data assimilation scheme for a quasi-geostrophic channel model (Morss, 1998) is used to study the structure of the background error and its relationship to the corresponding bred vectors. The “true” evolution of the model atmosphere is defined by an integration of the model and “rawinsonde observations” are simulated by randomly perturbing the true state at fixed locations. Cas...
متن کاملThe Use of Bred Vectors in the NCEP Global 3D Variational Analysis System
The errors in the first-guess (forecast field) of an analysis system vary from day to day, but, as in all current operational data assimilation systems, forecast error covariances are assumed to be constant in time in the NCEP operational three-dimensional variational analysis system (known as a spectral statistical interpolation or SSI). This study focuses on the impact of modifying the error ...

The properties of the multiple-scale instabilities present in a non-hydrostatic forecast model are investigated. The model simulates intense convection episodes occurring in northern Italy. A breeding technique is used to construct ensembles of perturbations of the model trajectories aimed at representing the instabilities that are responsible for error growth on various timescales and space sc...
